Saint Gonsalo Garcia was a Roman Catholic Franciscan friar from India, who died as a martyr in Japan. He was born in the western coastal town of Vasai near Mumbai in 1556. He was declared a saint by the Catholic Church in 1862 and is the first Indian to attain sainthood.
